Not only it comes in a booming segment...
...but it will allow Lexus to grow the RX, to better compete with the X5 and ML, rather than having it to balance between the X3 and X5, and maybe to give it a 7 seats version like dealers want. There are also rumors talking about Lexus working on CLS and X6/X4 rivals.
Not sure if just following the niches set by the Germans is a smart move. Lexus should create its own niches, and wait for the Germans to follow.

Agreed.
A 7 (useable) seat RX would absolutely kill. So many people buy the GX because they want a Lexus with a 3rd row, but don't really want/need/will ever use all the 4WD, off-road-worthiness.
There is absolutely room in the market for a $60 7-seat RX and the $60k GX. The new GX was even taken down-market to try and capture those 7-seat SUV buyers. They threw in synthetic fabrics (which are horrid) and removed the power 3rd row. The manual seats are impossible to deploy quickly, cut the rear cargo by 2/3's and are best left unused.

I wouldn't buy a high riding minivan that a 7 seats crossover is, but if they make the profits for cooler stuff out of that. I don't have a problem with it.
